Five Things You Can Do Tonight to Support Your Child's Math Skills

Supporting your child in math does not require advanced knowledge or special training.
Some of the most effective support happens through small, consistent actions at home.
What matters most is not how much you know, but how you engage with your child’s learning.

1. Ask Them to Explain Their Thinking
When your child is working on a problem, ask them to explain what they are doing and why.
Not to check the answer. Not to correct them immediately. Just to hear their reasoning.
A child who can explain their thinking is building a deeper understanding than a child who is simply following steps.
If they struggle to explain, that is useful information. It often points to where understanding needs to be strengthened.
2. Connect Math to Everyday Life
Math is not limited to worksheets.
It shows up in daily routines like cooking, shopping, and managing time.
