A six-week evening Algebra cohort using Google Classroom and Google Meet, focused on helping middle school students build real Algebra understanding and lasting math confidence.
The Algebra Ready Cohort is a six week, countywide evening virtual program for Prince George’s County middle school students who are currently enrolled in Algebra 1 or who will take Algebra 1 in the upcoming year. The program is grounded in the philosophy of “Confidence before correctness” and is designed to help students strengthen Algebra foundations, explain their thinking, and build confidence with the reasoning Algebra requires.
The primary focus is algebra readiness and confidence-building rather than homework completion. The cohort follows a structured progression that supports students in building conceptual understanding through discussion, guided problem solving, virtual manipulatives, feedback, and engaging learning activities.

Six Week Outline
Week 1: Algebra thinking and number sense for Algebra
Students learn how Algebra works as a language. We review key number sense skills that show up constantly in Algebra and set confidence goals for the cohort.
Week 2: Expressions, variables, and simplifying
Students practice translating words into expressions, using order of operations, and simplifying expressions using like terms and the distributive property.
Week 3: Equations and solving with meaning
Students solve one step and multi step equations and learn how to check solutions. Emphasis is placed on explaining steps and reasoning, not memorizing procedures.
Week 4: Proportional reasoning and percent as a foundation for Algebra
Students strengthen ratios, rates, and percent reasoning and connect these ideas to equations and real world situations.
Week 5: Linear relationships and patterns
Students explore patterns, tables, and graphs. Students learn how to represent relationships and interpret what they mean in context, building readiness for slope and intercept thinking.
Week 6: Algebra readiness review and next steps
Students apply their skills to multi step problems and real world modeling tasks. The cohort ends with the final readiness check, confidence reflection, and clear next step recommendations.
